This Privacy Policy describes how plause (“plause,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) handles information in connection with the website located at plausebtw.com and its subdomains (the “Site”). By using the Site, you acknowledge the practices described in this Policy.
1. Information We Collect
1.1 Information you provide. The Site does not offer accounts, registration, or logins for visitors, and we do not ask you to provide personal information in order to use it. The only exception is the optional email signup described in Section 1.7.
1.2 Cookies and similar technologies. The Site itself does not set cookies. Google Analytics, described in Section 2.3, sets its own first-party cookies (such as _ga) to count visits and distinguish returning visitors. If you select a light or dark appearance using the Site’s theme control, that preference is stored in your browser’s local storage on your own device and is not transmitted to us. Citation lists you create with the citation generator, and study sets you create with the study tool, are stored the same way, as described in Sections 1.5 and 1.6.
1.3 Information collected automatically by our service providers. When you visit the Site, our service providers described in Section 2 automatically process certain technical information necessary to deliver and measure the Site.
1.4 IQ tests. The IQ tests on the Site ask for your age and record your answers in order to calculate a score. This happens entirely within your browser. Your age, answers, and results are not transmitted to us or to any third party, and are not stored after you leave or reload the page.
1.5 Citation generator. The citation generator at plausebtw.com/cite stores your citation lists, their names, and your style choices only in your browser’s local storage on your own device. They are not transmitted to us, and we cannot view, recover, or restore them; clearing your browser data deletes them. If you use the lookup feature, the link, DOI, ISBN, or search text you enter is sent to the Site’s server, which uses it to retrieve publicly available details about the source from the web page itself or from public bibliographic services (Crossref, Open Library, Google Books, and YouTube). Those services receive the request from our server, not from your device. We do not store the text you look up or associate it with you.
1.6 Study tool. The study tool at plausebtw.com/study stores your study sets, your study progress, and your settings only in your browser’s local storage on your own device. They are not transmitted to us, and we cannot view, recover, or restore them; clearing your browser data deletes them. Text you paste and files you open to import cards are read entirely within your browser and are not uploaded. If you copy a share link for a set, the set’s contents are written into the part of the link after the “#” sign, which browsers do not send to our server; anyone you give the link to can see the set.
1.7 Email updates. If you enter your email address in the email signup form at the bottom of the homepage, we store that address, the date you signed up, and the country your request came from (as reported by Cloudflare) so that we can email you when something new launches on the Site. We use your address only for that purpose and do not share it with anyone else. Every email we send includes a link to unsubscribe, and you can also ask us to delete your address at any time as described in Section 11. Before the form is sent, Cloudflare Turnstile runs a brief check in your browser to confirm that a person, not an automated program, is signing up; see Section 2.5.
2. Third-Party Service Providers
2.1 Cloudflare hosting. The Site is hosted and delivered by Cloudflare, Inc. In handling each request, Cloudflare processes information such as your IP address, browser and device type, the page requested, and approximate location, for the purposes of delivering the Site and protecting it against abuse and attacks. Cloudflare’s handling of this information is governed by its own privacy policy, available at cloudflare.com/privacypolicy.
2.2 Cloudflare Web Analytics. We use Cloudflare Web Analytics to understand how the Site is used. A script provided by Cloudflare records the page loaded, the referring site, browser and device type, country, and page load performance. Cloudflare Web Analytics does not use cookies or local storage, does not fingerprint visitors, and does not track visitors across other websites. We receive only aggregated statistics, such as daily visits and most-viewed pages, and we do not attempt to identify individual visitors.
2.3 Google Analytics. We also use Google Analytics, a service of Google LLC, to understand how the Site is used. A script provided by Google records the pages you view, the referring site, browser and device type, approximate location, and how you interact with the page, and sets cookies that let it recognize your browser on later visits to the Site. This information is sent to and processed by Google. We use it only to view aggregated reports and we do not use it to identify individual visitors or for advertising. Google’s handling of this information is governed by its privacy policy, available at policies.google.com/privacy, and you can opt out with the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on or by blocking cookies in your browser.
2.4 Google Fonts. The Site’s typeface is served by Google Fonts. When your browser requests the font, Google receives standard request information such as your IP address. Google’s handling of this information is governed by its privacy policy, available at policies.google.com/privacy.
2.5 Cloudflare Turnstile. The email signup form uses Cloudflare Turnstile, a service of Cloudflare, Inc., to block automated signups. Turnstile loads only when you scroll to or use the form. It examines signals from your browser, such as browser and device characteristics and how the page is used, to tell people and automated programs apart. It does not use cookies for advertising or track you across other websites. Cloudflare’s handling of this information is governed by its privacy policy, available at cloudflare.com/privacypolicy, and its Turnstile privacy addendum.
3. How We Use Information
We use the aggregated information described above solely to operate, maintain, secure, and improve the Site. If you contact us, we use the information you send only to respond to you or to address the matter you raised.
4. What We Do Not Do
We do not:
- sell, rent, or trade information about you;
- display advertising or use advertising trackers or cookies; or
- build profiles of visitors or track visitors across other websites.
5. Your Content
Any message, bug report, issue, file, or other material you send to us (“Your Content”) remains yours. We claim no ownership of Your Content. We use it only to respond to you or to address the matter you raised, and we do not disclose it to others except where required by law.
6. Data Retention and Security
Apart from the email addresses of people who sign up for updates (Section 1.7), which we keep until you ask us to delete yours (if you unsubscribe, we keep only a note that your address unsubscribed, so it is not emailed again), we do not maintain a database of personal information about visitors. Analytics are retained by Cloudflare and Google in accordance with their policies. Correspondence you send us is kept only as long as needed to respond to you. We use reasonable measures appropriate to the nature of the Site to protect the information we handle, but no method of transmission or storage is completely secure.
7. Your Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to request access to, correction of, or deletion of personal information about you. Unless you have signed up for email updates, we do not collect personal information about you directly and will generally hold none, but you may contact us as described in Section 11 and we will respond to any request in accordance with applicable law.
8. Third-Party Sites and Applications
The Site contains links to other websites and applications, including Bulldog and GitHub, which are governed by their own privacy practices. Bulldog stores your schedule and settings on your own device; its in-app privacy information describes its practices in detail. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of third-party sites.
9. Children’s Privacy
The Site is not directed to children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date above. The complete revision history of this Policy is publicly available on GitHub. Your continued use of the Site after an update constitutes acknowledgment of the revised Policy.
11. Contact
Questions or requests regarding this Policy may be directed to plause via github.com/noplause.
